Compound microscopes are sometimes referred to as "biological microscopes" and provide high-power magnification of two-dimensional specimens that are typically mounted on prepared microscope slides. Most compound microscopes have several objective lenses mounted on a rotating nosepiece to allow for several magnification options. Compound Microscopes can also be used for non-biological applications such as the metallurgical variety which provides lighting through the objective for very small circuits and other purposes.

Stereo microscopes provide three-dimensional stereoscopic images of the specimens you are viewing. These types of scopes are particularly of use in dissection, circuitry repair or stamp and coin collecting. They offer fixed magnifications that can be modified with accessory objectives or eyepieces.

Stereo Zoom Microscopes offer the the most increments in a range of magnifications. The zoom allows you to achieve any magnification between the highest and lowest magnifications. This offers great versatility insofar as being able to magnify parts of a specimen to exact magnifications that are required for the specific application.
